Since its founding in 1932, LEGOs have fascinated the fledgling builders in all of us — from young to old and everyone in between. Dump out a pile of LEGO bricks and you can’t help but start putting one together with another, and so on and so on. Over the years, LEGOs became an integral part of mainstream culture and, for some lucky builders, full-time, LEGO-building jobs at Legolands around the world in San Diego, Florida, New York, England, Denmark, Germany, Malaysia, Japan and Dubai.
While we may not all become professional LEGO builders, we can still have fun with all of the sets LEGO creates. Here, we look at a few of the new sets that recently debuted so you and your kids can get your building on.
The girls in your life will set their sights beyond the horizon and into outer space with the new Women of NASA box set. Inside, use your creativity and determination to build three LEGO projects that illustrate the areas of expertise of four featured women of NASA — astronomer and educator Nancy Grace Roman; computer scientist and entrepreneur Margaret Hamilton; astronaut, physicist and entrepreneur Sally Ride; and astronaut, physician and engineer Mae Jemison. If only we could really see through the Hubble Space Telescope made of LEGOs.
Before you travel to India to see the real thing, dive into this LEGO Creator Expert model complete with arches, domes, minarets and finials. Patience is key when you start building, but just imagine the results.
Aspiring architects and designers will love the new LEGO Architecture interpretation of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, an iconic New York City landmark. Once you’ve built it, plan a trip to the Big Apple to marvel at the real thing.
A LEGO set for little builders, Heartlake City Playground is the winner of the LEGO Friends Designer Contest. Your kids will be inspired to know this fun set was designed by 9-year-old Sienna, inspired by her own neighborhood playground.
