Parents convinced they can’t have a full-service family resort experience without spending a fortune can have their cake and eat it, too, at Kingsmill Resort on the James River near Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center. Not only is the resort wallet-friendly, but it’s also designed to offer a cozy, activity-filled getaway not only in nice weather but even in the chilly depths of winter.
Accommodations include condos and multiroom cottages with kitchens, and there is no resort fee, despite the long list of family-friendly amenities.
Fun options include a zero-entry outdoor pool with a kids slide and lazy river; a marina on the James River with kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and jet skis; and golfing, tennis, Segway tours and bike rentals. A free shuttle is available to area attractions like Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg. On-site restaurants are kid-friendly and an on-site café offers home-made gelato and pastries.
Kingsmill offers a seasonal Kids Camp with such sports activities as swimming and water games in the outdoor/indoor pool, collecting seashells at the marina beach and creating arts and crafts.
Available for young guests aged 5 to 12, the camp is priced at $50 for a full day, including lunch and snacks; $30 for a half day.
A Kids Night Out program, priced at $40 for kids aged 5 to 12, offers dinner, movie and snack so Mom and Dad can enjoy a well-earned night off.
In winter, the resort gets creative with indoor camping experiences and adventures that include personal children’s tents — which kids get to keep afterwards — microwavable s’mores kits, glow sticks and bottled water. Outdoor s’mores roasts and family time around the firepit are also available.
Family-friendly packages typically include free WiFi, complimentary parking, use of the fitness center and, of course, the 85-degree indoor-outdoor pool, as well as free shuttles to popular area attractions.
Meanwhile, parents can enjoy Kingsmill’s spa, which offers couples’ rooms and quiet rooms for a bit of serenity, as well as design elements that invoke nature, such as river rocks and natural lighting and colors. Best of all, the spa enjoys stunning overlooks at the scenic James River.
Overnight rates begin at $144 with advance purchase through March 31, 2018, in a one-bedroom condo with private wood-burning fireplace — the resort will provide free firewood and will even light the fire for you.
Spa packages start at $339 a night for two people in a one-bedroom condo with fireplace, as well as a choice of two spa services, including the spa service tip.
Kingsmill Resort is an AAA Four Diamond condo resort located between Richmond and Norfolk, and within minutes of Williamsburg. Packages and activities vary by season and availability.
