Travel Tips

Travel to the Mile High City of Denver with a few pro tips. For families and travelers headed to Colorado’s capital, whatever the reason, read up on these in-the-know suggestions for an effortless travel experience.

How to Pack

Depending on the time of year, make sure your family loads their suitcases with light layers, a couple warm pieces, hats, sunglasses, scarves and a few all-weather accessories. Layering your clothing will be a life saver as the sunshine in Downtown Denver can feel powerful any time of year. The weather can change on a dime, so be prepared for warmth, winds and dropping temperatures all in one day.

Another pro tip, bring along a portable charger. With all the urban adventures and time spent out and about exploring the city, you’re going to want someone to have a charged phone to navigate GPS, take pictures and everything in between.

How to Handle Altitude

As Denver sits 5,118–5,675 feet high, equaling a mile or more depending on the city region, above sea level, it’s easier than it sounds to manage negative altitude effects. We’ve all heard stories of altitude sickness and drowsiness, but for those who stay proactive and thoughtful of the thinner, dryer air, it’s an easy adjustment.

Drink lots of water with meals and bring some with you out and about with the kids. Pack a couple water bottles each and be mindful of your hydration. The more water you drink, the easier it is for your body to adjust to the higher altitude.

With a city as walkable and expansive as Denver, it’s easy to explore, but be mindful of your family’s activity level. Replenish with water and take it easy if anyone starts to feel lightheaded.

Adults, be sure to keep an eye on your alcohol intake as the effects may hit you harder than they would at home.

How to Navigate

Speaking of physical activity, Denver is easily explored by foot, bike rental, ride share or public transportation. There is so much to see that, just to save time, you may want to load up on the Light Rail or ride share, but enjoy the fresh air too with some walking and biking. Just be sure to bring some hats, sunglasses and sun protection for the family. As crisp as the air can be and as quickly as the temperature can change, Denver sees 300 days of sunshine a year.

Committed to walking? There is so much to see around every corner. Start at Denver Union Station and grab a coffee and bite for breakfast; head to Rockmount Ranch Wear for some local goods and shopping; bring the books to Tattered Cover Book Store; hop on the free bus through 16th Street Mall; head over to Denver Performing Arts Complex; and make a stop at the Colorado Convention Center for a family photo-op with the Big Blue Bear.

One thing we don’t need to help with is how to have fun. Between the rustic shops, myriad of galleries, eclectic nightlife and live music mixed with ample fun foodie and brewery options, Denver has you covered.
