Travel Tips

Every time we lotion up and head into the ocean, a thin layer of sunscreen washes off our bodies, contaminating the marine life — even the waterproof variety. One way to reduce our impact on the ocean: switching sunscreens.

While still providing protection from the sun’s harmful rays, these SPF lotions won’t pollute the ocean and damage coral reefs. Consider swapping in a few chemical-free brands that protect your family’s skin, and marine life.

For $39, Beautycounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 is made with non-nano zinc and antioxidant-rich California Poppy. The lotion rubs on smooth and light, but still protects against harmful UV rays.

Another sheer zinc sunscreen that works well on sensitive skin, kids included, is Babo Botanicals. The natural ingredients protect your skin in a variety of sheer zinc sunscreens, lip balms and hair care.

The Honest Company sells more than baby accessories, they also have mineral-based sunscreen good for you and the ocean. Try the Honest Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 for full, sheer protection, ranging around $7–13.

Another trusted favorite, Sun Bum offers a plethora of broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection that is gluten-free, vegan and free of harmful chemicals. Shop face lotion or original recipe, ranging $9–16.

Cruelty free, environmentally friendly and reef friendly, Coral Isles boasts chemical-free sunscreen, beginning at $7. The mineral sunscreen is no-fuss, unscented, just great protection and waterproof coverage. Shop by portable sizes, spray and bulk pumps to refill your own bottles as you go.

Thinksport broadband sunscreen is dermatologist recommended, reef safe and great for active kids. Shop by Every Day Face sunscreen with a natural tint, Kid Safe sunscreen SPF 50 for children of all ages, or Thinkbaby sunscreen for the little ones. Load up on a family size and keep everyone protected for $21, or the standard Thinksport sunscreen for $13.

Mama Kuleana products are reef safe, Hawai’i-approved. The waterproof sun protection even comes in a biodegradable container for $21.

Another island-approved option (with really cute packaging) Kokua Sun Care is made with seven all-natural ingredients, including KonaRed Hawai’ian coffee fruit extract, noni, spirulina, Plumeria flower, honey, macadamia and Kukui nut oil. Shop the SPF 50, 80-minute waterproof collection, beginning at $30.

Perfect for the little ones and the environment, Little Hands Hawaii offers sustainably sourced and plastic-free products.

All Good products are reef friendly and come in a wide variety. Shop the kid’s section, coconut oil, lip balm and lotions and sprays, priced around $11–20.

Where to Tiptoe Through Tulips in the United States

First brought to the United States by Dutch immigrants in the late 1600s, tulips have become a colorful symbol of spring throughout the country and a popular spring and summer spot for family travelers. You don’t need to travel far to find them blooming in front yards and, in spring, displays of tulips paint parks and botanic gardens from Maine to Texas.
