Exploring the city of Luxor is as close to quintessential Egypt as it gets. Sitting along the east bank of the Nile River, the city of Luxor offers all the desert sands, ancient sites and royal tombs you can handle — surrounded by a mix of opulent architecture and authentic eateries.

Vacationing to such a royal and historic city may seem like a luxury endeavor, especially with the family in tow, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Getting there may be one story, but sticking to free, or close-to-it, activities on your family trip to Luxor, while still enjoying all the riches the region has to offer, is one activity you may not mind.

Luxor is basically a community of artifacts, so it’s almost required your family checks out some of the many local museums. Pay a visit to the Mummification Museum for roughly $11 a ticket and the Luxor Museum, and then enjoy the open-air stretch of ruins and statues of Karnak. Snap pictures by the desert ruins and take in all the history and local culture for little damage to your wallet.

While you can explore much of Luxor by walking around, there is so much to see just outside the center, requiring a taxi or bus. Just across the river bank, travelers find the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens and Temple of Hatshepsut. Enlist the help of a tour to bundle it all for an affordable price or maneuver your own way with the help of your hotel concierge or a handy map.

Make your way to the Temple of Hatshepsut and explore the bazaar. Take in the views while shopping local, handmade goods at cost. The market will be open daily and boasts free parking for families renting a car, but guests can also hop on a shuttle for about $6 and save a few dollars.

Of course, you’re in Egypt, so a camel ride may be on the horizon. Shop around a bit before your trip for the best deal and avoid gimmicky tourist traps.

When you get back to your hotel, check out the nearby area for local, cheap eats. You’ll have plenty of options within budget or splurge at your hotel — after a long day of landmark hunting and exploring, you’ve earned it.

Luckily for your wallet, even a splurge at a 5-star hotel in Luxor is a reasonable price. Level up when it comes to your family stay and you’ll enjoy all the benefits of a knowledgeable concierge that can help your family get the most out of Luxor.
