North America

Halloween is around the corner and it’s the perfect time to plan family travel to a haunted destination. Check out these spooky spots around the country.

Kentucky

Visit Blue Heron Mining Community. The abandoned coal town within Daniel Boone National Forest hosts an annual Ghost Train tour in mid-September. Guides bring visitors through the dim passages of the abandoned camp and recount creepy tales of the people who lived and worked in the coal town.

Michigan

Marquette County, Michigan, has seen its fair share of ghostly happenings. The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is home to the ghost of a young girl left behind by her parents. The lighthouse now houses a museum, open to the public for tours May–October.

Mississippi

Vicksburg, Mississippi, is home to the state’s most haunted house. The pre-Civil War house is home to at least 14 ghosts. Take a history or haunted tour, or arrange a private investigation. Vicksburg National Military Park is the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Visitors report smoke coming out of cannons, sculptures weeping blood, spectral soldier sightings and the scent of gunpowder in the air. Learn about these and other sites on The Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Walk.

New Jersey

Located in Passaic, New Jersey, Brighton Asylum shut down in 1952 following a string of missing patients. The location reopened in 2011 as a haunted attraction with options including escape rooms, axe throwing and ghost tours.

Rhode Island

City Hall in Providence, Rhode Island, was built in 1875. Featured on Ghost Hunters, the building has a haunted history with reports of items moving on their own, strange whispers and spectral cigar smoke.

South Dakota

Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City, South Dakota, is considered one of the most haunted hotels in South Dakota. Built in 1928, the hotel’s hauntings primarily occur on the eighth floor. Room 812 is haunted by the “Lady in White,” who opens windows, removes dresser drawers and wanders the halls. Guests on the eighth floor also report the ghost of a young girl who knocks on the door and disappears down the hallway.
