On Dec. 1, Lufthansa joined the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, supporting people with invisible disabilities in public spaces. About 1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, with up to 80 percent having an invisible disability such as chronic illness, mental issues or sensory impairments. Now, family travelers with disabilities can fly with ease with Lufthansa.
In fact, Lufthansa Group aims to have all of its airlines join the program by the end of 2026. Currently, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, SWISS and Lufthansa are part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program.
In addition to Lufthansa joining the program, the Sunflower Program will also be implemented at Lufthansa’s two home airports — Munich (MUC) and Frankfurt (FRA) — from January 2026 onward. Sunflower lanyards will be available at information or special services counters at these airports and also be issued at the Lufthansa special services counters.
Passengers with non-visible disabilities can also contact airport and Lufthansa staff, even if they are not wearing a Sunflower identification badge. It’s important to note wearing the lanyard does not replace an escort or wheelchair service, nor does it allow for preferential or faster progress at check-in or security. Rather, it is about respect, awareness and empathy at all points of contact.
Lufthansa Group continues to improve the travel experience for those with impairments or disabilities. This past November, Lufthansa held its first Accessibility Customer Advisory Committee in Frankfurt.
