Travel Tips

For children of a certain age, asking for a kid’s menu is the only way to ensure they find something they will eat while dining out. For those picky eaters, or little ones needing a meal just their size, a kid’s menu can be a lifesaver for parents.

While traveling, finding something for the choosey children in your brood can be a bit more challenging — exhibit airplane food. Lufthansa’s new menu not only includes children, it caters to them — literally.

If you happen to be flying the German airline on your summer family vacation abroad, rest assured, your little ones will have their pick of well-balanced options.

Renowned 2-star chef Alexander Herrmann, a Nuremburg and Wirsberg restaurant owner and father of two, developed a menu specifically for little ones. This menu is actually kid-tested and designed with kids, parents, health and sustenance in mind. Herrmann designed the menu and prepared a tasting with an international children’s jury of 13 kids in March. The jury of taste-testers of 4–9 years old, prepared by LSG chefs, was entirely overseen by Herrmann himself who was on site for any questions the young testers might have.

Of the many dishes the kids tasted, the winners landed a spot on the menu; including dragon feet, or chicken sausage with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes; and a rice pudding mousse made with creamed rice pudding and raspberries.

Young passengers flying on any European flight from Germany with Lufthansa will have the menu option this summer. Choose your meal up to 24 hours in advance on long-haul flights.

Teaching the kids testing the food a bit more about it is right on-brand for Herrmann. His cooking school and various TV appearances all support his focus on nutrition and understanding our food and where it comes from.

Specifically designing menus for the smallest travelers onboard is nothing new for Lufthansa. World-renowned chefs have developed children-specific menus since 2002, serving approximately 2.2 million little travelers.

While the kid’s meals are all colorful, fun and creative, they are always keeping with a well-balanced diet, high in healthy fats in smart portions.

Finding something for the kids on the adult menu is also an option, but how much more fun is it for them to order dragon feet?
