Ready or not, it’s nearly beach season and the kids will be out of school before you know it. Check out these top beaches along the East Coast for some summer inspiration.
The Jersey Shore is famous for a lot of things, but some of the lesser-known wonders, including Long Beach Island, remain a favorite among locals. Sitting just about 18 miles long, the island offers a stretch of beach to one side, scenic bay views to the other and a healthy lineup of neighborhood shops and restaurants between. Some of the more popular shops and dining options populate Beach Haven, but for families looking for a little less hustle and bustle, Love Ladies and Ship Bottom may be the neighborhood to make home base.
Already known as a go-to for golfers, Myrtle Beach’s scenic shores are worth the trip for the whole family. Resting on South Carolina’s Atlantic coast, Myrtle Beach boasts about 60 miles of stunning beaches to choose from. Walk along the boardwalk, play arcade games, ride the Ferris Wheel and eat your fill from the ice cream stands — it’s vacation!
Tybee Island, near Savannah, is well-known for its long and wide sandy beaches with ample room for families to spread out and spend the day, or just pop in and out on a weekend trip. Relax the day away on the scenic beach or cool off with some refreshments on the pier. Splash around in the ocean with the kids, or take them on a little adventure to the nearby 18th-century lighthouse. Still operating, take some family photos by the lighthouse and visit the museum while taking in sweeping views of the island.
Stretch your legs on the three-mile walk along the boardwalk of Virginia Beach. The kids will love all the local attractions and family fun at their disposal, including the famous Neptune Statue. Bounce around from place to place, as this beach offers far more than a stretch of sand. Visit the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, First Landing State Park and scenic beaches and bays on either side.
North Carolina’s Outer Banks are beloved by East Coasters and travelers in the know. One specific beach worth a visit for all ages and interests in your family, Nags Head is a natural beauty. This beach town has trails for biking, hiking and easy walking, all with forested views. For a full view of the beach, head up to the Bodie Island Lighthouse, leftover from the 1800s, and snap some pictures of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
