So you and your family are looking for a place to stay in London? There are obviously many neighborhoods to choose from, depending on what you want to see and be close to, but if it’s your first time in the city and you want to avoid the crowds while still enjoying close proximity to several major attractions, there are several reasons to consider Vauxhall.
Affordability
While properties in Mayfair and Kensington may charge a premium for even the most basic hotel rooms, in Vauxhall, you can find suitable accommodations that provide all the amenities you need, at a more reasonable price. For families seeking extra space and the comforts of home, Staybridge Suites London Vauxhall offers roomy, updated guestrooms complete with full kitchens. Other international brands in the neighborhood include Park Plaza and Crowne Plaza.
Walkability
Though partially a residential neighborhood, Vauxhall is walkable and, given the nearby location of several government buildings (including the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service) and student living, walking about after dark feels completely safe. You’re also within easy walking distance of several train stations, a handful of restaurants and bars and convenience stores for any late-night purchases.
Proximity
Located right on the River Thames, Vauxhall has taken advantage of its location and added comfortable green space along the river, which become popular with families, couples and runners during nice weather. Walk just a little further, though (about 20 minutes), and you’re directly across from the Palace of Westminster, with views of Big Ben and the London Eye. Crossing the Westminster Bridge puts you directly in the heart of activity for tourists visiting these attractions, as well as Westminster Cathedral.
Attractions
However, there’s no need to leave Vauxhall to enjoy some of London’s other attractions. The neighborhood is home to the Migration Museum, which catalogues the history of migration to and from the United Kingdom, as well as the Garden Museum, which celebrates all things British gardening (the Brits do take it seriously). The London Fire Brigade Pop-Up Museum would be of special interest to youngsters going through a fire truck phase, but it’s also quite interesting to parents, as it overviews the ways fires and firefighting shaped London’s past. For unique art and interesting specimens, the Newport Street Gallery displays work by everyone from Banksy to Francis Bacon, alongside oddities from taxidermy to anatomical models.
