While families get ready for the summer season, planning vacations and plotting weekend getaways, the city of Philadelphia is, too. Whether deep in the heart of the city, visiting a trendy neighborhood or just sticking along the outskirts, there are a few family-friendly and nearly summer-ready destinations in the Philadelphia area worth visiting this year.
Piazza Pod Park
Popping up at The Piazza in Northern Liberties this month, the new Pod Park welcomes artists, foodies and everyone in between for a fun and all-ages mixed-used community space. Visitors can explore various art installations and featured local cuisine, as well as getting active with some fitness elements, boutique shops and a mix of events, live entertainment and music throughout the summer.
Sesame Street Neighborhood
Coinciding with Sesame Street’s 50th birthday, Sesame Place has an all-new look for summer. The first theme park in the world designated as a certified autism center, and the only one in the country themed for the beloved show Sesame Place, it only gets better time. Families visiting the park this summer will see the all-new Sesame Street Neighborhood, updated to match the show’s fresh new set, and a live show starring Elmo, Big Bird and Abby Cadabby. Cool off on water rides, watch the kids interact with their favorite characters and even take a selfie with Snuffleupagus.
Franklin Square Fountain Show
Possibly one of the most underrated parks in Philadelphia, Franklin Square always has something going on. The 180-year-old fountain is one of the first designated public spaces in Center City, as imagined by William Penn himself. Beginning this summer, the fountain will undergo a few updates to the tune of $2 million, but not without some fanfare. Enjoy Franklin Square Fountain Show festivities with events including live shows and choreographed dances alongside water works and a spectacle of lights.
Cherry Street Pier Artists and Artisans Market
Enjoy the summer views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge from the newly reopened Cherry Street Pier. The space is already worth visiting for random markets and shops, but this summer especially, your family can shop handmade goods and completely unique creations on the last four Sundays of the month, all summer: May 26, June 30, July 28 and August 25. Dine on food trucks and street fare located throughout the market, or walk outside on the pier for more open-air options along the water.
