Budget

While most travelers know Lake George to be a bustling lakeside beach town in the summer, it’s actually a true stunner in the fall and winter also. With warm-weather seekers and summer crowds heading home, Lake George stays open for business well into the fall and offers even better deals for traveling families looking for a budget — without having to compromise.

Pack your warm socks and blankets and plan for a rustic family trip with stays like beach camping and lodge-style rooms or opt for something mid-range where your family can enjoy some amenities at an affordable price, like at the Holiday Inn Lake George.

When it comes to dining, throw a rock and hit about five great down-home spots for something local and comforting the kids will love. Keep it light and casual for breakfast with quick eats, like coffee and a pastry at Caffe Vero. This year-round restaurant provides an easy breakfast for on-the-go families, or head over later in the day for a hearty lunch.

After filling up with some fuel for the day or if you’re looking for a way to earn your appetite, spend the day hiking local trails, walking through town shopping and enjoying a cocktail or two by the water. There are plenty of bars, wineries and breweries located along the lake that welcome families of all ages, so you have your pick.

You’ll start to get the sense this is a family-friendly town with plenty to do for all ages. The kids can hit the arcade, stop in local t-shirt shops along the main drag and buy candy or homemade sweets around nearly every corner.

While you may be upstate, you’re still in New York and a slice (or two) of pizza is part of the experience. Head to Pizza Jerks for a quick, casual lunch or dinner with options from salads, subs, calzones and a wide variety of pizza, typically ranging $9–15. If the kids are craving something smoky and barbeque is more your style, The Barnsider Smokehouse BBQ boasts a cozy atmosphere perfect for a chilly night in town.

Strap on your hiking boots, bundle the kids and get some great photos at Shelving Rock Falls or hop on a Lake George Cruise for a better view of the famous lake and town. Take in the stunning fall foliage from the water while hearing about the history of Lake George. Cruises begin at $19 for adults.

With the vibrant fall colors fading for a quiet, cold, winter upstate, now is a great time to get a last-minute, and affordable, family vacation on Lake George.
